Volumetric Weight Explained: How Carriers Really Price Your Parcels

Why a big light box costs more than a small heavy one, the divisors carriers use, and five ways to cut shipping costs.

If you've ever been charged more than expected for a large but light parcel, volumetric weight is why. This guide explains how it works and how to keep it under control. Try the numbers yourself with the Volumetric Weight Calculator.

Why carriers charge for space

Vans, aircraft holds and containers fill up by volume long before they hit their weight limit when the cargo is light. To price that fairly, carriers convert a parcel's size into an equivalent weight, its volumetric or dimensional (DIM) weight, and bill whichever is greater: the actual weight or the volumetric weight. The billed figure is the chargeable weight.

The formula and common divisors

Volumetric weight = Length × Width × Height ÷ Divisor

SystemUnitsCommon divisorsWhere you'll see it
Metriccm → kg5000, 6000, 40005000 for many express/international parcels; 6000 is the IATA air-cargo standard
Imperialin → lb139, 166139 is common for US domestic parcels; 166 for some services

A smaller divisor means a higher volumetric weight. Carriers change divisors and rounding rules over time, and negotiated contracts can differ, so treat any published figure as a starting point and confirm with your carrier.

Worked examples

Box (cm)ActualVolumetric (÷5000)Chargeable
30 × 20 × 103 kg1.2 kg3 kg (actual wins)
50 × 40 × 304 kg12 kg12 kg (volume wins)
60 × 40 × 408 kg19.2 kg19.5 kg after rounding up

Five ways to reduce chargeable weight

  1. Right-size the packaging. Keep a range of box sizes, or use on-demand box makers at higher volumes.
  2. Use mailers for soft goods. Clothing in poly mailers often ships at actual weight.
  3. Measure correctly. Round to the nearest whole unit the way your carrier specifies, and measure bulges, because carriers re-measure and re-bill.
  4. Consolidate shipments. One well-packed carton usually beats several partly empty ones.
  5. Negotiate the divisor. At volume, moving from 5000 to 6000 reduces volumetric weight by about 17%.

Automating it

E-commerce platforms usually calculate chargeable weight at checkout from stored product dimensions. Multi-carrier shipping APIs such as those in our shipping & logistics category return live rates that already apply each carrier's rules. That's the most accurate option once you're shipping regularly.
